Grom Nation aims to ensure that the children of Siargao are major benefactors of tourism on their island.
Our mission is to provide the kids and families of Siargao with the skills, education and opportunities needed to access futures free of poverty. Our focus for the children is to use surfing as a mechanism of engagement in order to achieve maximum participation in our programs. When children attend school all week, we take them surfing on the weekends as a reward. We are hoping this will create a pattern and a change in attitude towards school and education. We have already seen a huge improvement in school attendance!
But that's not all we do...Grom Nation is renting out donated surfboards to tourists in order to assist families to access health care, career opportunities and education. We run regular mentor sessions with local kids, inspiring them to respect, responsible and always ready to learn.
To inspire safer, stronger, more educated communities in Siargao
We do this in many ways:
Our RESPECT workshops - talking about attitude, behaviour, bullying, sexual harassment, rape culture, diversity and empathy
Our school attendance rewards programs - kids must have school attendance of 90% a above to surf with us
Life- skills workshops
Environmental workshops - beach cleans, eco-bricking, education
Our "Happy helmets" road safety campaign
First aid and CPR training
Dance, music and sports sessions for building self-esteem
To become a self-funding entity
We hope to achieve this by building our own surf shop in General Luna. This will be open to tourists for board rental and lessons. All revenue from the surf school will go toward the local community and to funding Grom Nation programs such as community health programs, school sponsorship, surf competition sponsorship and our skills and education programs.
Encourage sustainable, environmentally conscious communities
We hope to establish sustainable practices in local communities. We aim to educate our groms about the importance of protecting the environment and empower them to play a key role in preserving their island.
To build community centres in around Siargao
These will host our programs and provide a safe space for our groms to hang out and be productive, away from negative influences such as drugs and alcohol. These centers will also be used for board storage and to run community programs.
Groms learn about ocean safety as well as surfing
